Federal Research Security Training

Faculty and researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Department of Energy (DOE) are required to complete Research Security Training prior to proposal submission. To access the UChicago Research Security Training, please visit Workday Learning: Research Security Training. This streamlined one-hour course fulfills new federal requirements covering international collaborations, cybersecurity, travel, and disclosure obligations. This training must be completed annually.
In accordance with federal regulations, proposals will not be submitted unless this training has been completed. For more information, please reference the University’s Research Security Policy. Federal Research Security Training: Pre-Award Guidance
Research Security Training must be completed prior to proposal submission for:
- NIH – effective October 1, 2025 for all senior/key personnel
 - NSF – effective October 10, 2025 for all senior/key personnel
 - DOE – effective May 1, 2025 for all named personnel, regardless of role
 
Effective in October 2025, this guidance will also apply to NIH projects at Just-In-Time (JIT) stage, so senior/key personnel must complete the Research Security Training at JIT stage prior to submission of any JITs to NIH. Note: This guidance will also apply to NIH projects at RPPR stage.
If you have already taken the Research Security Training, then no further action is needed at this time.
